Afrika Speaks: Is the UK school system pushing an LBGT agenda?

Like all creatures of creation prepare their young for adult, independent life and for the preservation of its species, all people prepare their children for an adult life within society and to preserve and perpetuate the cultural values and tradition of the people. This is in essence what education is. (1)
– interim National Afrikan People’s Parliament, MANIFESTO Working Draft

As the above indicates schooling is more than just about grades and league tables.  It is very much about socialisation – in this case, into British society.  With regard to this there is growing concern about an LBGTQ agenda being pushed through the school system especially through “Sex and Relationships Education” (SRE), which is compulsory for maintained schools in England from age 11 upwards.  Academies and Free Schools are not obliged to teach sex and relationship education, although if they do, they must have regard to the SRE guidance issued by the Secretary of State. (2)

However, parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the sex and relationship education provided at school except for those parts included in the statutory National Curriculum (the only exceptions to this are the biological aspects of human growth and reproduction that are essential elements of National Curriculum Science). (3)

SRE is not compulsory in primary schools but The Department for Education:

“…recommends that all primary schools should have a sex and relationship education programme tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of the children. It should ensure that both boys and girls know about puberty and how a baby is born – as set out in Key Stages 1 and 2 of the National Science Curriculum.” (4)

Nevertheless, books like One Dad, Two Dad, Brown Dad, Blue Dad, My Two Moms and Prince Henry, as well as resources like Stonewall’s Different Families, Same Love are targeted at children pre-compulsory SRE age.  (5) In the case of the latter:

“Children with lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans family see their families as special and different in the same way as any other young person. Our Different Families, Same Love materials have been used by thousands of schools round the country to celebrate different families, and to talk with pupils about how every family is special and unique.” (6)

In addition to a campaign, supported by charities and academics alike petitioned the government to “Introduce LGBT sex education as a compulsory part of the school curriculum,” because “the numbers of people who identify as LGBT are hugely growing.” (7)  In similar vein, there have been proposals to for children to be “taught about homosexuality in maths, geography and science lessons as part of a Government-backed drive to celebrate the gay community,” while former Lib Dem leadership contender Norman Lamb MP has argued that “children’s television shows like Peppa Pig should feature more homosexual characters.” (8)

The government has yet to cede to this demand but it did announce funding of £2 million made available for not-for-profit organisations to bid for grants to deliver creative ideas to build schools’ capacity to address homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.” (9)

The claim of a rising LBGT population was based on a 2015 YouGov poll that asserted that “1 in 2 young people say they are not 100% heterosexual”:

“Asked to plot themselves on a ‘sexuality scale’, 23% of British people choose something other than 100% heterosexual – and the figure rises to 49% among 18-24 year olds” (10)

Another area also reported showing an increase is “Transgender” children.  According Scarborough College’s BBC School Report, the number of children aged ten or under who have been referred to the NHS because of transgender feelings has more than quadrupled in five years.  The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, the UK’s only centre specialising in gender issues in under 18s, said that the number of under 11s referred to the unit has risen from 19 in 2009-10 to 77 in 2014-15. (11)

Within the last year the referrals have allegedly increased to 167 and include three children aged three.  Treatment can include hormone blockers when they are approaching puberty and at age 16 cross-sex hormones. Full surgery is only offered after the age of 18 with the estimated cost of gender reassignment surgery on the NHS around £10,000. (12)

With reports of ‘Gay, Lesbian School Opening In Atlanta To Enroll Kids as Young as 5 Years Old’ and ‘LGBTQ Support Rises at Historically Black Schools’ , there is also evidence to suggest that this trajectory is gaining traction internationally across the entire academic spectrum. (13)

Further evidence of the international scope can be found in International Planned Parenthood Federation programmes that target Afrika and the Caribbean such as Comprehensive Sexuality EducationCSE has the support of the World Health Organization, United Nations Population Fund, UNICEF and UNESCO, which Theresa Okafor, Director for Foundation for African Cultural Heritage, based in Nigeria states as its aim “get parents out of they and radicalize and sexualise our children” and acceptance of which is sometimes linked to aid. (14)

Traditionally, Afrikan culture has regarded what is currently termed “LBGT” as outside of normal or acceptable behaviour.  (15)Yet, former UK Education Secretary Nicky Morgan suggested that “intolerance” of homosexuality in schools may be a sign of extremism. (16)

So tonight we ask the question:

Is the UK school system pushing an LBGT agenda?

1.    Do you allow your children full access to the SRE curriculum?
2.    If LGBT numbers “hugely growing” shouldn’t it be compulsory in the curriculum to reflect society?
3.    Can a child of three be transgender?
4.    Is “intolerance” of homosexuality evidence of extremism?
5.    Should SRE/CSE be dismissed as logical outgrowths of a white supremacist system with focus placed on building Afrikan institutions?
6.    What is the interim National Afrikan People’s Parliament’s position onSRE and CSE?
