After our tribute programme on March 30th (the day of their passing – https://www.mixcloud.com/AfrikaSpeaks/tribute-remembering-sis-nkechi-and-bro-dougie-300320/), Bro. Douglas “Dougie” Williams and Sis. Nkechi Ode have now been laid to rest, with ceremonies/tributes broadcast live on the MediaNet Live TV platform on May 6th and 14th respectively, attracting over four thousand views between them so far (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgWjJHRB9YN_1PJmu2HFP6w/videos). In the case of Bro. Dougie, there was also a live simulcast on a number of community radio stations including Galaxy, SLR and Concious. However, it remains the intention that public memorials will be held for both in the community once the social restrictions (“lockdown”) have been lifted.
One of the reasons the passing of Bro. Dougie and Sis. Nkechi touched so many people was their selflessness in the cause of our people. All that knew them testified to their warm, engaging spirit. They manifested the values that are essential to the building of our community and our nation – they were principled, industrious and possessed an uplifting countenance, rarely seen without a smile.
Through his decades on liberation road Bro. Dougie developed a formidable presence in the community and a platform to match – Find Your Voice, which really took off as a show on SLR Radio and was later established as a community event focusing of key areas of Afrikan life including holisitic health, relationships and economics.
For her part Sis. Nkechi spent almost a third of her life as a member of the Alkebu-Lan Revivalist Movement, advancing to become one of its most highly regarded officers, always looking for ways to enhance and develop the programmes of the organisation. She was particularly known for being well-known across different sectors of the community, essentially making liberation ideology and practice accessible to those who wouldn’t normally engage with the so-called ‘conscious community.’
The challenge for the community now is how to continue their magnanimous legacies. The good news is that we understand that Bro. Dougie’s family are consulting with key members of the community to ensure that the good work undertaken under the Find Your Voice platform continues. Of course, Sis. Nkechi’s spiritual and cultural home, the Alkebu-Lan Revivalist Movement will continue but must be more infused with her spirit to reach our people in a more meaningful way.
