Afrika Speaks with Alkebu-Lan on Galaxy Radio 31/08/20 – What is the connection between spirituality & Afrikan Liberation? Pt. 2

GARVEY LIVES!

MOSIAH LIVES!

As outlined on the previous show, the “religious” trajectory of the UNIA-ACL was “Afrikan Spiritual Orthodoxy: Afrikan must see God and the divine according to our own culture, and reject the imposition of others upon us.” (1)

Even while doing this, the organisation remained the proverbial broad church, uniquely able to attract members across faiths and denominations:

Only a movement that welcomes all people of all denominations and is officially attached to none while having its own assembly halls can spread its new wide enough to gather in all people desiring to identify with it.” (2)

Today, perhaps in part due to the absence of the successful, overarching structure that the UNIA-ACL in its hey-day provided, some eschew the focus on spirituality (or “religion”) regarding it divisive. However, some of these same advocates will laud contemporary examples of economic or political power (e.g. China), while overlooking the fact that this current dominance is rooted on the firm foundation of the Cultural Revolution. Yet it hard to find examples of any people attaining self-determination outside of their own spiritual/cultural matrix. As Bro. Ifayomi Grant Explains:

On this basis I concluded that almost all Afrikan (Black) countries are culturally legless and exhibit low levels of power on the world stage.

I spoke about these topics in noting the book ‘Tribes’ by Joel Kotkin which identified the common cultural traits which underpin the success of what he termed as the world’s ‘global tribes’: Anglo Saxons, Chinese, Japanese, Indians and Jews. I have also told you previously that the only Afrikan leader who was identified as having formulated a manifesto or programme based upon these traits or characteristics was The Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. ” (3)

We ask the question:

What is the connection between spirituality & Afrikan Liberation? Pt. 2

1) Is the focus on spirituality (or even religion) divisive?

2) In what ways did the Garvey Movement use Spirituality or religion?

3) Can we free ourselves operating outside of our own spiritual/cultural matrix?

4) Do Afrikans need a “Cultural Revolution”?
