Public Health England has published details of the priority groups for Covid-19 vaccinations once it becomes available. First on the list are “Residents in a care home for older adults” and “Staff working in care homes for older adults (priority 1)”, followed by “All those 80 years of age and over” and “Health and social care workers (priority 2),” “All those 75 years of age and over (priority 3)”, “All those 70 years of age and over” and “Clinically extremely vulnerable individuals (not including pregnant women and those under 18 years of age – priority 4)”, going down to “All those 50 years of age and over” (priority 9). In spite of the advocacy of the London Mayor Sadiq Khan (2), the so-called “BAME” communities are not included as a specific priority group even though “Current evidence suggests that deprivation and being from Black and Asian Minority Ethnic groups results in a higher risk for death from SARS-CoV-2” (3). Nevertheless, Afrikans are overwhelmingly over represented (not much short of half all employed Afrikans) in the “public admin, health and education” sectors, giving the likelihood of accounting for significant proportions of the highest priority groups. light of the foregoing, it is possible that a large amount of Afrikans will be confronted with being directly offered the Covid-19 vaccine, precipitated by an extensive testing regime, even though in the previous shows we’ve delved into the somewhat murky issue of vaccines and the vaccine industry. (5)
Nothing has been declared mandatory yet but one can imagine that reluctant staff will be subject to a greater or lesser degree of persuasive weight, buttressed by an extensive promotional campaign that encompasses ‘most comprehensive flu jab campaign in UK history’. (6) Given the reports of abuse suffered by non-mask wearers, the availability of a vaccine could send this tendency into overdrive. (7) Yet, that a government characterised by seemingly endemic incompetence, corruption and impunity (in this current period alone – let alone historically) can hardly be a paragon of rectitude. (8)
