The crisis resulting from the eruption of La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent and The Grenadines, displacing tens of thousands is continuing to attract the attention of the global Afrikan community.

Prime among this is the relief effort, and how the government is dealing with it.  Indeed, the suggestion from Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves’ administration (although initially attributed to the cruise companies) that evacuation shelters and cruise ships are open only to those with a Covid-19 vaccine has led to widespread consternation, with the Natural and Common Law Tribunal for Public Health and Justice issuing a “Cease and Desist” order to the government. (1) Gonsalves himself has a controversial history that previously led some to declare him “eminently unsuitable to represent us as Afrikans…” (2)

With an event of such magnitude different theories emerge about its cause, with some suggesting that the geothermal drilling that has taken place in the region has been a factor, although not everybody agrees. (3)  More contentious is the claim that the eruption was caused by the infamous High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) and that the ash resembles explosive dust similar to 9/11. (4)  However as the US Air Force announced 2014 that it was closing HAARP in 2014, some have dismissed its alleged ongoing use as a conspiracy theory. (5)
