As we observe the 112th Earthstrong of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah on September 21st, we assess the extent to his visionary ideals still have a place in Afrika’s ideological landscape. Upon attaining liberation for Ghana in 1957, he set about procuring nothing less than the same for the entire continent. His government transformed the infrastructure of the west Afrikan state while keeping the “liberation torch burning very brightly” by providing financial, political and other material support for freedom fighters across the continent. (1)
However, the forces of imperialism had no intention of relinquishing its prized possession (Afrika) as it worked to extinguish some of the regions brightest hopes either before they were able to take the reigns of power or shortly after they had as in the cases of Um Nyobè, Boganda, Lumumba and Cabral to name a few. (2). Indeed, the so-called ‘Cold War’ was the main driver of the coups that blighted the continent. (3) Now with recent events in Guinea, Mali, Niger and Chad (we might also include Tanzania and the perennial crisis in Congo DRC), commentators are asking if “coups are making a comeback.” (4)
So amid a backdrop of aligning international forces through globalisation, the great re-set and the 4th industrial revolution (all turbo-charged by the Covid ‘Pandemic’), the seeds of chaos are being sewn (or rather, re-sewn) all over Afrika. (5) Aside from the issuing of arbitrary suspensions here and there (6) the continent-wide body (African Union) is ill-equipped to address these issues substantively given that “the imperialists” contribute 74% towards its overall costs and fund 97% of its programmes. (7)
While Kwame Nkrumah was a visionary who had an abundance of co-travellers, their revolutionary heirs are much harder to spot in the current climate. In fact, political analyst Bro. Rutendo Matinyarare has said of some the more prominent young leaders such as Julius Malema, Bobi Wine and Nelson Chamisa that they are “Pulled on a string as puppets with no ideology.” (8)

we ask the question:
Nkrumah’s Ghost Pt. 1: Where is the Pan-Afrikan Vision?
1) Where would Afrika today be had Kwame Nkrumah not been ousted?
2) Why do coups on the continent seem to be making a “comeback”?
3) Do todays emerging leadership really have no ideology?
4) Is Afrika equipped to deal with globalisation, the great re-set and the 4th industrial revolution?
