We conclude our remembrance of the Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah assessing the state of Afrika and the prospects for the future. In the previous show, the consensus arrived at was that Afrika is in “crisis”. (1)
One of the key factors highlighted is the persistence of neo-colonialism even since the period of so-called independence sixty years ago. (2) Of the modern manifestations we can cite the USA’s Africom programme and their forty military bases across the continent. (3) Pointedly, this extensive military presence is seemingly unable to prevent the coups that analysts are saying are making a comeback. (4) Of course, there is also France with their CFA Franc Zone and widespread intelligence activities, the ill-gotten gains of which have literally kept The Fifth Republic out of the so called “Third World” (5) However, opposition to their machinations are on the rise, as evidenced by mass protests in Mali. Yet the fact that these demonstrations are interspersed with pro-Russian sloganeering must give pause for thought. (6)
As a proscription for change, our guest outlined the scope of the challenge:
“We now need leaders that get into leadership knowing that we have to break the cycle of the system, by not educating ourselves in the west, educating ourselves in Afrikan terms. Having our intellectuals writing books and curriculum suited for Afrika. Our religious systems must start to reflect Afrika. Our thinking and philosophy needs to be Afrikan… We’ve got to de-colonise the Afrikan mind and we’ve got to understand that western education is not an achievement but it is actually a miseducation, the destructive death culture that we have adopted.” (7)

we ask the question:
Nkrumah’s Ghost Pt. 2: How do we de-colonise Afrika?
1) Where will Afrikan leaders capable of breaking the cycle of dependency come from?
2) What would “books and curriculum suited for Afrika” contain?
3) What does de-colonising the Afrikan mind entail?
4) Do the protests in Mali represent a changing tide or change in coloniser?
5) What role can Afrikans in the diaspora play?
