For our first show of 6262 (2021), we look back at the previous year, Sankofa style, to see what we want to fetch from there into the coming 12 moons.
During this current time the global Afrikan has had to deal with tragic losses and last year was no different, we lost some giants – like Runoko Rashidi, like Menelik Shabazz. On the Motherland Pombe Magufuli was taken out and closer to home we lost our dearly beloved Big Bro, Gamba Kokayi. All of these and more were covered on Afrika Speaks last year.
As continue to fight for the lives of our young people, we were reminded that when they are faced with danger, we are met with indifference from the state. This was typified woefully in the case of young Bro. Richard Okorogheye.
But we began the year by paying tribute to Baba Patrice Lumumba and welcomed his grand-nephew Jean-Jacques Lumumba into the Afrika Speaks family.
Of course, the effects of the Pan/Plan/Scam-demic loomed large and we frequently returned to the subject, from the establishment attempts to get our people to take the jab to its place within the ‘Great Reset’.
Some fabulous new initiatives were featured on the show including the launch of FACFO (Federation of African / Caribbean Funeral Operatives) and the Black Card Lottery. One of the highlights was the bringing of ‘Valerie’s Law’ closer to reality when the campaign led by Sistah Space successfully garnered 100,000 signatures in the mission to mandate specialist, culturally appropriate training for all police and other government agencies that support black women and girls affected by domestic abuse.
That was just a quick snapshot of some of our shows last year. All of which, and many more besides can be found on our Mixcloud page (https://www.mixcloud.com/AfrikaSpeaks/).
we ask the question:
6261 (2021) how was it for you?
1) What are you leaving behind in 6261?
2) What are you bringing into 6262?
3) What should our priorities be this year?
