GARVEY LIVES!

MOSIAH LIVES!

“But in your homes and everywhere possible you must teach the higher development of science to your children, and make sure that we have a race of scientists par excellence. For in religion and science lies our only hope to withstand the evil designs of modern materialism.(1)

– Marcus Mosiah Garvey, 1925

The most eminent one’s words from almost a century ago have indeed proved prophetic, as we stand on the verge of the Forth Industrial Revolution (2) while the Motherland “Continues to Lag Behind in Technology.” (3)

Papa Garvey was clear about what Afrika and Afrikans needed to do to gain self-sufficiency and our current global status is a testament to how far we still have to go.  Of course, in the 1920s Afrikans existed under the yoke of colonialism on the continent and what some describe as internal colonialism in the European world.  (4)  But even under these conditions our scientific prowess was clearly manifested – primarily to the benefit of our oppressors. (5)

For many of us when we contemplate science and technology cutting edge systems and devices spring to mind.  However, in reality, science and technology have always been deployed to solve problems.  One of the most urgent areas requiring attention relates to food and water insecurity, particularly in Afrika but these resources, under current conditions, are increasing in scarcity in the European world as well mainly for the poorest.  Even the days of cash are numbered. (6)

The legacy of colonialism (i.e. neo-colonialism) has engendered leadership lacking in vision and agency as a consequence the overwhelming majority of homes in Afrika of all income strata cannot rely on utilities for consistent electricity and water.

One innovative company seeking to solve this problem is the 25th Dynasty Group whose mission is to “identify and solve housing, energy, water and business development problems in Africa using the most sustainable solutions possible.”

“All homes are sold with pre-installed solar panels and off grid lithium ion battery systems along with rooftop rainwater catchment systems connected to underground water storage cisterns.  The purchase price of each home will ensure that the homeowner has uninterrupted and renewable electricity along with uninterrupted and renewable water for a lifetime using nature’s abundant sunshine and rain.” (7)

The importance of harnessing the power of water and electricity cannot be overstated.  For example, the effective use of water also underpins Afrika’s agriculture industry which employs more than 60 percent of the continent’s labour force and accounts for 23 percent of Sub-Saharan GDP.  (8)

So the kind of work undertaken by the likes of The 25th Dynasty Group, applying science and technology par excellence, is essential for Afrika’s self-reliance and self-sufficiency, utilising our scientific and technological genius as Papa Garvey exhorted us to.

we ask the question:

How can we develop “a race of scientists par excellence”?

1) What are “the evil designs of modern materialism”?

2) Have we lost our appetite for developing our own science and technology

3) Can an Afrika that is not resource self-sufficient ever be liberated?

4) How can we institute self-sufficient approaches across the Afrikan continent and Afrikan world?

5) What role do Afrikan governments play in this process?
