Following on from our Shumira on June 2nd where we declared “Rise O Mighty Herukuti: We gather in your honour”, we continue our tribute to our dearly beloved Elder, also known to many as Cosmo Ben Imhotep.
His iconic scene in the film Babylon afforded him global recognition but his legacy reaches far beyond that. Invaluable work with our young people in places like the Simba Youth Project has not just borne fruit but veritable orchards.
Emerging in the 1970s/80s, an era where Afrika UK was characterised by consciousness, culture and creativity Baba Herukuti distinguished himself as a master exponent of them all. Whether working with film makers like Menelik Shabazz or Franco Rossi, or musicians like Ras Messengers, Ras Angels or AnkAnum or on Galaxyafiwe where his voice thundered across the airwaves (“outside ‘dere”) pronouncing FINAL JUDGEMENT.
Once again we submit our condolences to his family who inform that his laying to rest will take place in late June or early July. A gofundme appeal has been set up for this purpose (https://www.gofundme.com/f/cosmo-aka-elder-herukuti?qid=29108d7870148f07e175c9e0a4307f7f).
It was remarked at the Shumira event that whatever our equivalent of a state funeral is, that is exactly what Baba Herukuti deserves.
