GARVEY LIVES!!!
MOSIAH LIVES!!!
We are arguably in the midst of something of a purple patch on writing around The Most Eminent Prophet and King, His Excellency Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the organisation he founded and the Movements he inspired. (1) Some writings, by a diverse range of authors, have been assembled in a 2019 collection called Global Garveyism – a titled mooted by the official historian of Marcus and the UNIA-ACL, Baba Tony Martin almost twenty years ago (maybe more). (2)
However, it is not clear to what extent these works have contributed to a greater overstanding of the life and legacy of the Prophet among the masses of Afrikan people. Some of them them are ostensibly intended to circulate in an academic loop, removed from widespread consumption.
One publication that is certainly intended for extensive access is the new ebook by community activist, author, historian and broadcaster Sista Shanice Lindsay, Tribute to Marcus Mosiah Garvey. In just fifty pages the book distils some of the key political, cultural, social and economic lessons from the Garvey movement, replete with study questions (with answers provided). Although an engaging read for adults it could easily be the key text of a Marcus Garvey curriculum in our foundation schools – certainly distinguishing it from most of the recent works in this subject area. (3)
This speaks to a related issue of the role of scholarship within the community and how it is utilised. Raising young people on a Marcus Garvey curriculum is something is way overdue in the same way there is still “an urgent need to infuse Garveyism into the National Standards Curriculum” his Jamaican homeland. (4)
On her track Imagine, Jah9 sung: “Imagine, if Marcus Garvey was the youth’s dem example, What the future would be promising.” Part of that example must be the organisations we build, the institutions we establish and inaugurate the systematic teaching of Mosiah in our education institutions.
As Sista Shanice says:
“His extraordinary achievements foster a legacy of self-suciency, empowerment, and transformed mindsets that continue to inspire future generations of leaders. Garvey’s enduring legacy is a testament to the transformative power of envisioning a brighter future beyond present constraints.” (5)

we ask the question:
How should we teach young people about Mosiah?
1) Why has there been an increase in books on Marcus in the last decade?
2) Who is the target audience?
3) Should Garveyism be on the curriculum in all foundation schools?
4) How are we going to make this happen?
