As we conclude the month called Osagyefo, in honour of the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, we continue our exploration his political inheritance in the region of Afrika known as the Sahel, that we have classified as Ouagadougou.
In the previous show it was affirmed that the actions of the The Alliance of Sahel States (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger), that they have named “Liptako-Gurma,” meaning “what cannot be overcome,” in Fulani, show signs of replicating the Nkrumahist legacy. (1)
We could include as examples of this on the economic front Niger’s 30-megawatt solar power increasing generation capacity by 60 percent; Burkina Faso’s commissioning of a gold refinery and tomato processing plant and Mali’s nationalisation of its cotton industry as well as increasing its cotton production by constructing two new factories. They have also been cultivating relationships with Russia, China, Iran and Turkey. (2)
It was also made clear that these movements were driven by the genuine revolutionary spirit of the people weary of neo-colonial domination but that “we must not lose sight of the contradictions” that exist in the leadership such as their previous profile as part of the ‘bourgeoisie,’ although the presence of the likes of Sankaraist Burkinabé Prime Minister Apollinaire J. Kyélem de Tambèla is encouraging. There is also a view that Liptako-Gurma are more immediately taking up the mantle of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi (extinguished by NATO in 2011) rather than The Osagyefo from the 1960s. Although this is not a perspective shared by all. (3)
Whatever the concerns exist about the depth of the orientation of the Liptako-Gurma, they undoubtedly are in the heat of a war on many fronts. Sabre rattling in addition to sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, supposedly the regional economic bloc, are limiting access to electricity, medicines, and food, while the African Union looks on passively. (4)
We also need to pay attention to the propaganda war to influence hearts and minds against our own liberation. It is through this lens that we can understand the recent propagandising against and ultimately banning, at the behest of the USA State Department, of the Kenya-based independent Pan-Afrikan digital news network African Stream, following unfounded accusations – for many, a sure indication that they are doing something right. (5)
As History shows that the propaganda war is the prelude to a military one Afrikans at home and abroad will be required to be extra vigilant and proactive in seeking out truly Pan-Afrikan sources of information. (6)
In light of the fact that some, like The Coalition for the Elimination of Imperialism in Africa attest that the fight in the Ouagadougou, and further afield “has rapidly consolidated into a Pan-African union for the complete emancipation of Africa,” it represents our brightest hope in the current arena, the aforementioned concerns notwithstanding. we ask the question:
Is Nkrumahism Rising in the Sahel? Pt 2
1) Will the policies (and partners) prove effective?
2) Are the leaders also taking up the mantle of Gaddafi as well as Nkrumah?
3) What is the significant is the banning of African Stream?
4) Has the region “rapidly consolidated into a Pan-African union for the complete emancipation of Africa”?
