Afrika Speaks with Alkebu-Lan on Galaxy Radio 18/08/25 – What is Mosiah’s legacy in the Spanish speaking world?

August 18, 2025 Alkebu-Lan

GARVEY LIVES!!! GARVEY LIVES!!! GARVEY LIVES!!!

MOSIAH LIVES!!! MOSIAH LIVES!!! MOSIAH LIVES!!!

In the days before social media as we know today, Marcus Mosiah Garvey could have been regarded as the premier ‘influencer’ of his Day. His organisation, the UNIA-ACL, set the tone for Afrikans politically, culturally, socially and economically. (1)

It is important to note that the organisation’s reach went far beyond the English speaking world. Indeed, it’s newspaper, The Negro World, published sections in both Spanish and French, as well as English. (2)

Further evidence can be gleaned by the number of UNIA-ACL branches non -English areas such as the Greater Caribbean, including Central America and the northern part of South America, was its largest stronghold. Cuba had 52 branches, Panama 47 and Costa Rica 23, compared with Jamaica for example that had 11. (3)

It’s a legacy that has continued in the Spanishs speaking world, albeit under the radar for much of English speaking diaspora, save for occasional explanations like the the film, The Promised Ship. (4)

In the present. A conference celebrating Marcus Garvey Day was held in Cali, Colombia on 9-10 of Mosiah. Members of the Permanent Secretariat of the conference, Xiomara Angulo Prado, Fabian Riascos,, Teresa Castro Escalante, Tomas Tiotom Abuy, Nfubea Bermúdez released a joint statement:

“Among the debates and proposals approved at this congress, we can highlight those that have been aimed at moving toward a congress agreement, political report, and action plan. We will analyze the general state of affairs, focusing, first, on the challenges that Pan-Africanism, and its vanguard as the Fourth International Garveyist Pan-Africanist movement, takes a further step in our responsibility to consolidate kilombo, marronage, and Pan-Africanism in Latin America. “

we ask the question:

What is Mosiah’s legacy in the Spanish-speaking world?

1) How did Garveyism penetrate the Spanish speaking world?

2) How has it been maintained?

3) How successful have Pan-Afrikanists been at overcoming the language divides?

4) How can we support the objectives of the Cali, conference?
