The USA is claiming a “dominant victory” in it war on Iran, while at the same time begging (and now threatening) NATO and other allies for help clearing the crucial Strait of Hormuz currently under Iranian control. (1)

Observers believe that having secured the Strait of Hormuz, the Houthis, aligned with Iran have now set their sights on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the horn of Afrika creating a “Double Chokepoint.” Such a move would doubly infuriate Israel amid suggestions that its recent recognition of Somaliland was an opening salvo in a bid to control the vital trade route. (2)

Meanwhile, rumours abound about the demise of the leader of the other leg of the US/rael axis, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after two videos, both regarded as AI generated have failed to convince. The situation caused UK politician George Galloway to quip “If he is dead, then who exactly runs America now?” (3)

Further afield, the war is also said to having an impact on conflict in Sudan. The United Arab Emirates are massive supporters of the brutal Rapid Support Force but reporting indicates that “Iran’s strikes inside UAE fuel ‘rapid collapse’ of genocidal RSF militia in Sudan.” (4)

Thus with such a wide range of parties preoccupied with events in the Persian gulf, there may be space for respite for Afrika and even a Caribbean that ironically may see a tourist bump. However, so far this has been expressed largely in attempts to placate, or at least not antogonise US/rael. Whether this can actually be capitalised on by the administrations in both regions into something meaningful remains to be seen. (5)
