Grand Master Teacher Warrior Scholar Baba John Henrik Clarke famously declared: “Pan-Africanism or Perish.”
This was the title of the last book he was working on before he joined the Ancestors. He asserted that:
“Pan-Africanism or Perish is a program for the unity of African people throughout the world and my assumption is if we don’t unite, chances are we will go back into slavery.” (1)
For well over a century, Pan-Afrikanism has been seen as the vehicle for Afrikan liberation. It’s values have been extolled by no lesser luminaries than Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Queen Mother Moore, Carlos Cooks, Kwame Nkrumah, Ọmọ́wálé Malcolm X and Kwame Ture. In contemporary times it’s resurgence has been attached to the likes of Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traore and the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES). (2)
For this very reason is has always been opposed and attacked by the European colonialist, imperialist order, up to the present – as we saw in the recent European sponsored terrorist attack on Mali. (3) This notion is European forces hiding their hands while supporting black proxies is clearly de rigueur in the current climate.
We see it in the so-called delineation movements from FBA and ADOS in the USA that bear all the hallmarks of an old school COINTELPRO project to Afriphobia in Azania (South Africa). (4) It is a global strategy, we see it now in Spain in the form of Equatorial Guinean academics Eugenio Nkogo and Celestino Okenve. The two have gone on an anti Pan-Afrikanism media campaign, claiming that Marcus Mosiah Garvey was “a nobody who has created nothing and lacks the intellectual stature to bearthe name of a university.” The latter point is a reference to the Malcolm Garvey University founded by leading Pan-Afrikanism Dr Abuy Nfubea who has also been a target of the pair. (5)
Dr Nfubea responded by denouncing the campaign as both political and personal. He highlighted that the campaign is financed by the Spanish National Intelligence Center (CNI) and are upset at their waning influence among the Afrikan masses in Spain:
“For many years we have endured the false teachings and misguided pedagogy, devoid of any epistemological foundation, of this small elite, fresh out of the La Salle school of law. It is high time that all Pan-Africanists, Rastafarians, Black nationalists, and admirers of Marcus Garvey give the appropriate response to this irresponsible generation of Black champagne socialists who seek to replicate the same policies as William du Bois in the 1920s. These so-called educated or intellectuals are spewing fire, yet they refuse to debate on Uhuru Afrika TV with Abaga Edu. They seek to respond from an authoritarian standpoint, but without the moral authority to offer advice to the conscious masses.” (6)
These attacks wouldn’t be happening if real inroads were not being made against the global colonial/neo-colonial order. Moreover our adversaries are working on the principal exposed by Mama Marimba Ani: “When the enemy looks like us he’s harder to fight.” It appears that we are facing a generational challenge to Pan-Afrikanism and our response will determine how, or if it survives.
