On the 139th anniversary of the birth of the Most Eminent Prophet and King, His Excellency Marcus Mosiah Garvey, we contemplate his legacy, under the principles of Afrikan Fundamentalism, namely: Race First, Self Reliance, Nationhood and Afrikan Spiritual Orthodoxy. These constitute the Black Print, the pathway to Afrikan Liberation. (1)
The institutionalisation of Afrikan Fundamentalism is a mammoth undertaking so even as the whole remains elusive, we can seek out elements where they manifest. In the current dispensation of time and space, many are looking to west Afrika, the Ouagadougou (Sahel) region, the confederation known as the AES (Alliance of Sahel States) and the movement embodied in Burkina Faso’s talismanic leader Captain Ibrahim Traore. (2)
There is evidence suggesting this is no mere flash in the pan. The government headed by Traore since 2022 and his AES compatriots Mali’s Assimi Goïta (since 2021) and Niger’s Abdourahamane Tchiani (since 2023) can be seen as a response to “a series of popular demands that had been expressed in the streets for decades.” (3) This indicates that the masses have become cognisant of and weary about the lingering impact of neo-colonialism, highlighted by the likes of Kemi Seba, Arikana Chihombori-Quao and platforms like Africa Stream (before its targetting by the USA State Department). (4)
But an extra dimension in the Sahel is the so-called terrorism factor. Turbo-charged by the NATO destabilisation of Libya in 2011 that saw a deluge of weapons enter the region. France in particular was the nexus that connected armaments to terrorist groups, even while its declared mission was to fight terrorism, which in reality is a tool of Euro-American-Arabian imperialism. (5) By the early 2020s the tired of the duplicity of leaders too pliable to western interests, the people demanded change that ostensibly was not going to be delivered at the ballot box. (6)
Military coups have generally not worked for Afrikan people and even though the European and Arab media and institutions are desperately painting the AES in this light, something has caught the collective imagination, not only within the region but across the world, with Traore evoking memories of his revered predecessor Thomas Sankara who led a revolutionary government in Burkina Faso from 1983 until his assassination in October 1987. (7)
The AES are taking a concerted stab at sovereignty in terms security, resources, food and even religion. While not dismantling the Islamic or other religious structures Captain Traore is striving to render them subject to national sovereign interests. However, at the same time they are facing opposition from western proxies in the region like ECOWAS. The intransigence of such neo-colonial dynamics and a relentless propaganda campaign, along with some of the unique factors within the region may be a bulwark against the spread of the AES in neighbouring states and further afield. (8)
Nevertheless, as it stands, a strong case can be made for the AES as the most strident example of nationhood right now. But acknowledgment of that fact in insufficient given the forces waged against it. Bro. Oladele Dosunmu of The Emerging Alkebulan exhorts:
“To my African brothers and sisters: The question isn’t whether Traoré will succeed or fail. The question is whether we have the stomach for the discomfort of true liberation. Because breaking ties means standing alone. It means short-term pain for long-term ownership. It means choosing dignity over comfort.” (9)
