Footage broadcast by the Cable News Network (CNN) last month showing Afrikan men in Libya literally being sold on the auction block has sparked global outrage (1), with an a national anti-slavery march scheduled to take place in London on Saturday 9th December (2).
For many, this development is seen as a direct result of the 2011 USA-led NATO campaign that ultimately saw Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, by then power for 42 years, deposed. Former USA president Barack Obama has reflected that failure to prepare for the post-Gaddafi landscape was his “worst mistake” (3)
With his support for the Afrikan Union, proclamations in support of Pan-Africanism and his advocacy of a continental currency Gaddafi’s ouster was even more tragic for some activists who saw him as the most revolutionary leader in the region, with many even venturing to suggest that “this wouldn’t have happened under Gaddafi.” (4)
On the other hand there are others that affirm that Gaddafi is an Arab and point to his stated Arab expansionism and how he “has been particularly active in sponsoring chaos, anarchy and civil wars in Chad, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire etc., and in trying to Islamise Uganda, Rwanda, the CAR. (5)
Given that the anti-Afrikan atrocities began before Gaddafi was overthrown some are querying why this issue is coming to light only now and by the same western media that portrayed today’s “chattel” as yesterday’s mercenaries. (6)
